Hydroxyapatite formation on implanted hydrogel intraocular lenses.

چکیده
Three Chinese patients undergoing implantation with the same hydrogel intraocular lens (IOL)(Hydroview; Bausch & Lomb Surgical, Claremont, Calif) developed delayed IOL opacification with unusual clinical features. The IOLs were made from a 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate/6-hydroxyhexylmethacrylate (HEMA/HOHEXMA) copolymer. Opacification was progressive, whitish, and generalized, and developed 4 to 15 months after surgery. The appearance resembled a mature cataract. All 3 patients showed a significant reduction in vision. There was no response to Nd:YAG laser treatment, and all 3 IOLs had to be explanted. The explanted lenses were analyzed with electron microscopy, elemental analysis, Fourier Transform (FT) Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction to define the nature of the opaque material. Results showed electrondense deposits in the superficial 5 μm of the lenses. The deposits were predominantly composed of calcium and phosphorus, and x-ray diffraction identified the presence of hydroxyapatite. The polymer structure of the lens was unaltered.

Dynamic contour tonometry over silicone hydrogel contact lens.
PURPOSE This study compared the measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP) and ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) using the Dynamic Contour Tonometry (DCT) over silicone hydrogel contact lenses of different modulus. Corneal biomechanics were also measured using the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA). METHODS Forty-seven young (mean age 22.3 years, standard deviation 1.2 years) subjects had IOP, OPA, co...
متن کاملIntraocular lens design and the inhibition of epithelium.
Of 1170 eyes implanted with posterior chamber lenses between 1981 and 1986 and having intact capsules at surgery, 1015 were examined two years after surgery, 741 were examined three years after surgery, and 308 were examined five years after surgery. At three years the capsulotomy rate for epithelium was 25% for 263 'lasergap' lenses, 2.4% for 296 convex posterior lenses, 8.2% for 73 planoposte...
متن کامل[In vitro adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas alcaligenes to intraocular lenses].
PURPOSE To quantify and compare the in vitro adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas alcaligenes to different intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS Fourteen intraocular lenses were used in the experiment. Four of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), four of silicone, four of hydrogel and two of acrylic. Eight intraocular lenses were placed in eight test tubes containing 4 ml of Pseudom...
متن کاملThe measurement of intraocular pressure over positive soft contact lenses by rebound tonometry
PURPOSE To investigate if the accuracy of intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements using rebound tonometry over disposable hydrogel (etafilcon A) contact lenses (CL) is affected by the positive power of the CLs. METHODS The experimental group comprised 26 subjects, (8 male, 18 female). IOP measurements were undertaken on the subjects' right eyes in random order using a Rebound Tonometer (ICare...
متن کاملThrough focus image quality of eyes implanted with monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses
Intraocular lenses (lOLs) are commonly implanted in cataract surgery. Initially lOLs were mainly monofocal, but at present there are many multifocal lOLs available, which are being implanted. Multifocal lOLs have the potential advantage of reducing the dependence on spectacle correction for near vision after cataract surgery. Because the multifocal lOLs superimpose the near and far images on th...
